Time to make some pins that aren’t enamel! :D

These are just basic introductions to different materials…there’s so much to each of these they really need their own guide OTL

I’ve made aaaaalmost everything listed, just not shrink paper and laser cutting. If you can get your hands on a badge press I can highly recommend! It’s a great starter pin with so many options if you can find cool paper or films

Nail art supplies are a good source for little things that can go in badges, the first holographic film I used was for nail art. Toner reactive foil is also neat If you want to make shiny gold things!

something I personally do for every acrylic, wood and enamel design is a print test. This is to check the size and see what bits are hard to read or so small they aren’t needed. I find it can be tricky to visualise size looking at a screen, it’s a quick way to make it a tangible object

really gotta stress how important knowing the material is. I’ve had issues with every material, but sometimes the solution is as simple as me stuffing up or a miscommunication.

But yeah these are all just the basics, look around for guides specifically on each of these. I miiiight do one for printed acrylic though? maybe

Anonymous: I really like the color palettes for your OC's! How do you go about deciding those? (Aside from the pride ones, which I imagine is a different process)

thank you! uhhh it’s so ingrained in how I work I’m not sure how to describe it ^^’ don’t really consciously have anything in mind. Kind of absent mindedly remember nice colour palettes I see around me and sometimes incorporate those. I take lots of photos of random plants.

Only conscious thing I do is simplifying palettes! It’s something I started actively doing when I started animating more, it sucks individually colouring like 10-15 different swatches. So I try to limit my colours as much as possible and make the colours that are there count! usually aim for around 5-6.

the pride versions of the designs were actually the same as normal! a bunch of my ocs happened to match up with their flags anyway XD all colours start from a point of inspiration, those were just more obvious.

qualityanxiety: Hello! I was wondering how you started out animating, and how you did that. I’m a big fan of your work and when I found out you did animating I wanted to ask this question because I myself, are looking for a way to start animating, but it’s not like I can really afford all those expensive tablets..

AAH THANK YOU!! I started using just pencil and paper! it is a bit harder cause you can’t play it back in real time unless it’s a flipbook, but it’s still a start. Originally used Ulead gif animator to compile the frames, then photoshop (think anything from ps7 onwards has the gif feature, don’t need the fancy stuff).

If you can get your hands on even one of those cheaper tablets that opens up what programs you can use. Or do what I did and learn how to draw with a mouse…which actually isn’t that bad when you’re used to it. It was a while before I started using tablets, so it can be done!

Related to this post, I taught myself more complex animation by printing out frames and tracing over them. For me at least this really helped me learn timing without needing to have immediate playback

this isn’t a great example cause it’s missing a bunch of inbetweens, but it’s close enough ^^’

Anonymous: I am so, SO happy you made that comic about tracing. I have been using tracing for years to figure out how to draw anatomy. It really helps! But every time I see tracing come up online, it's only that tracing is "bad" or it discredits you as an artist. It is a wonderful tool, especially with realism so you can see how lines come together in a way you wouldn't have noticed if you sketched it freehand. You made my day ❤

thank you!! yeah that’s what’s great about tracing, you’re able to actually feel the difference when going over things. It’s important to visually see how things work, but feeling it opens you up to things you might not have seen.

Was going to include this as an example. Here’s an animation I traced when I was starting to teach myself

image

and here’s an animation done after that and on my own

tracing taught me something that would’ve been hard to learn visually. Timing. by tracing each frame I could feel how close lines had to be to get certain speeds, how movements arced. Sorry kind of side tracked XD

it’s time to trace~!

heads up. the charts in the middle are very rough guides. everything about copying is super grey, you need to use your own judgement…also I have more notes

This is mainly for people worried about referencing! There was a period where I went from tracing everything to being worried that even glancing at a ref would be stealing, that it was a show of skill to do it from memory.

I cannot emphasise enough how much refs help!! PLEASE USE REFERENCES!! If you gotta trace something to figure out how it works that’s fine, just keep it to yourself. You’re allowed to make stuff that’s only for you.

Parody/appropriation would take another whole damn guide to cover. It’s very legally grey. And intentionally so cause there are so many variables. Even doing something in fair use could face copyright action if the owner felt like it. It’s…very weird to describe without getting into stuff that sounds absolutely contradictory
