Anonymous: I really like the color palettes for your OC's! How do you go about deciding those? (Aside from the pride ones, which I imagine is a different process)
thank you! uhhh it’s so ingrained in how I work I’m not sure how to describe it ^^’ don’t really consciously have anything in mind. Kind of absent mindedly remember nice colour palettes I see around me and sometimes incorporate those. I take lots of photos of random plants.
Only conscious thing I do is simplifying palettes! It’s something I started actively doing when I started animating more, it sucks individually colouring like 10-15 different swatches. So I try to limit my colours as much as possible and make the colours that are there count! usually aim for around 5-6.
the pride versions of the designs were actually the same as normal! a bunch of my ocs happened to match up with their flags anyway XD all colours start from a point of inspiration, those were just more obvious.

qualityanxiety: Hello! I was wondering how you started out animating, and how you did that. I’m a big fan of your work and when I found out you did animating I wanted to ask this question because I myself, are looking for a way to start animating, but it’s not like I can really afford all those expensive tablets..
AAH THANK YOU!! I started using just pencil and paper! it is a bit harder cause you can’t play it back in real time unless it’s a flipbook, but it’s still a start. Originally used Ulead gif animator to compile the frames, then photoshop (think anything from ps7 onwards has the gif feature, don’t need the fancy stuff).
If you can get your hands on even one of those cheaper tablets that opens up what programs you can use. Or do what I did and learn how to draw with a mouse…which actually isn’t that bad when you’re used to it. It was a while before I started using tablets, so it can be done!
Related to this post, I taught myself more complex animation by printing out frames and tracing over them. For me at least this really helped me learn timing without needing to have immediate playback
this isn’t a great example cause it’s missing a bunch of inbetweens, but it’s close enough ^^’

Anonymous: I am so, SO happy you made that comic about tracing. I have been using tracing for years to figure out how to draw anatomy. It really helps! But every time I see tracing come up online, it's only that tracing is "bad" or it discredits you as an artist. It is a wonderful tool, especially with realism so you can see how lines come together in a way you wouldn't have noticed if you sketched it freehand. You made my day ❤
thank you!! yeah that’s what’s great about tracing, you’re able to actually feel the difference when going over things. It’s important to visually see how things work, but feeling it opens you up to things you might not have seen.
Was going to include this as an example. Here’s an animation I traced when I was starting to teach myself
and here’s an animation done after that and on my own
tracing taught me something that would’ve been hard to learn visually. Timing. by tracing each frame I could feel how close lines had to be to get certain speeds, how movements arced. Sorry kind of side tracked XD
