Anonymous: Can you make a video tutorial on how you do the gems gifs 😻😻🙏🙏🙏

I have a couple of time-lapse process videos up on YouTube for Amethyst, Stevonnie and new Amethyst :) haven’t got any specifically tutorial ones, I’m not sure what I’d really say or highlight in a proper tutorial aside from base steps ^^’ if I can think of anything I’ll think about it next time I work on one of them!

Anonymous: What software do you use to make the gifs of the gems?

Usually I use TVPaint for rough animation, SAI for drawing and Photoshop to put everything together. The Blue and Yellow diamond ones were a bit different, Blue had the rough animation done in PS, and Yellow’s in Flash.

Anonymous: I been wondering this for a while... You know how you did blue pearls see through dress ? Like how do you do it?? It looks amazing but it's been a struggle to make it see through

It’s really simple! for the skirt I have 3 main layers, the lines, shading, and base colour. The shading is clipped/grouped with the main (or it can all be on one layer), and the main is set to 40% opacity while the lines are kept at 100%

image

The skirt lines are lightly coloured as well, and all of underneath her skirt is coloured the same as everything not covered by the skirt :) I think shading the skirt helps it, but I’m not sure how to describe how I go about it ^^’

Sometimes I’ll put everything in a folder (’Skirt’ in this case) and lower the opacity of that, but here I wanted solid lines. Hope this helps!

Anonymous: Are you going to do the Diamon's Pearls and the other home world rubies?

Both Diamond Pearls are coming tomorrow! :D don’t think I’ll do the Rubies though, but if we see what Amethyst’s original outfit was I’ll draw her and original Ruby, Sapphire and Pearl! or if we see more of the Rubies ^^’

aidancos-deactivated20160201: Can you show us how you draw folds in the clothes (I think that's what they're called) like in the blue diamond thing?

Sure! it’s a little hard to describe though ^^’ like with this I find cloth creases one of those things I’m just used to doing, and that it’s a combination of what I think looks nice and what should probably be there.

image

Looking at your own clothes or just clothes in general really helps! even if it isn’t what you’re trying to draw, it all helps in understanding how cloth things work. For flowy things I try to draw the ends loose, lots of curving on top of itself for big waves, keeping it a continuous wave. Sometimes I try and imagine the weight of the curve, how it fits in with the others…it kind of helps.

image

For anything with a large drop (skirts, capes, aprons) I tend to draw out an oval and edge lines to figure out the overall curve of the fabric and where it ends, then I go over with whatever curvy line looks nice and fits the base line. For the creases imagine there’s a point that everything is attached to…well there actually is but yeah, follow the peaks of the curves up to those points. Same goes for the bits of cloth folded over itself underneath.

image

In terms of animation a basic way of showing cloth is a wave. It’s a little hard to see here, but there’s a continuous wave to the right, the edge of the cloth rests on top of that imaginary line. The Blue Diamond picture works the same, but with a more abstract line shape!

Hopefully this is somewhat helpful ^^’ but yeah, it’s all mainly habit for me now, not so much any one method that is obvious or any hints or tips I can give.
